A Foodie's Day Trip to Gunsan: Legendary Noodles and Korea's Oldest Bakery
When expats and tourists think of traveling in Korea, they usually head to Busan or Jeju. But if you are a true foodie looking for authentic local flavors and retro vibes, the port city of Gunsan (군산), located on the west coast, is an absolute must-visit.
Recently, I took a short trip to Gunsan. Here is a quick guide to my favorite culinary stops that you shouldn't miss.
1. The Rustic Charm of Bokseongru (복성루)
In Korea, there is a saying: "The older and more run-down the exterior looks, the better the food is." Bokseongru is the perfect example of this.
This vintage brick building might look like it hasn't changed since the 1980s, but it is actually known as one of the "Top 5 Jjamppong (Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup) Restaurants" in the entire country. The rustic atmosphere makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Be prepared for a queue, as locals from all over the country come here just for a bowl of their legendary noodles!
2. Lee Sung Dang (이성당): Korea's Oldest Bakery
No trip to Gunsan is complete without visiting Lee Sung Dang. Opened in 1945, it proudly holds the title of the oldest bakery in South Korea.
Their signature items are the simple yet classic Danpatppang (Red Bean Bread) and Yachaeppang (Vegetable Bread). You will see locals buying these by the box! The prices are incredibly reasonable, and they even offer delivery across the country for large orders.
But don't just stop at the traditional bread. Their modern desserts, like these gorgeous seasonal Peach Cakes, are beautifully crafted and bursting with fresh fruit flavors. The sweet cream and soft peaches melt in your mouth—a perfect dessert after a spicy bowl of noodles.
3. Sunset Over the Yellow Sea
After filling up on amazing local food, the best way to end your day trip in Gunsan is by heading to the coast. Since Gunsan is located on the west coast of the Korean peninsula, it offers some of the most breathtaking sunsets over the Yellow Sea. Watching the sky turn into painting-like shades of orange and purple is the ultimate healing experience.
If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Seoul and dive deep into Korea's rich culinary history, put Gunsan on your weekend itinerary!
